Lollapalooza 2011, Sunday: Lord Huron
I was kind of hoping Lord Huron had some kind of connection to the actual Lake Huron, so I could skim the shallow waters of geographical metaphor that come easily with this band's music. It turns out that principal songwriter Ben Schneider hails from Michigan, so there's always the option of talking Midwest. But the band is actually out of Los Angeles, and perhaps like indie breakouts Local Natives, it's honing a sound that could have come from the upper Midwest. Except that there's a bit of cosmopolitan genre wanderlust in this technically unsigned band's sound. At points, it enters grooves that could make for a more interesting Paul Simon album; at others, it picks up some vaguely Afrobeat-inspired guitar lines. Schneider holds his own with the gentlemanly, well-seasoned band. If the unsigned bit is true, don't expect that to last too long.
