Why is it so fun for some of us to beat up on Death Cab for Cutie? I don't know. Until the Decemberists came along and took historical twee to a often nauseating conclusion, Death Cab was one of our favorite punching bag bands in the music corner. The band seem to continually confuse limp with light, whiny with sensitive. But, come to think of it, the band's weaknesses—a sensitive guy, heart-on-sleeve, bummer-embracing style of indie rock that tends to be overly polite in every way—can easily be heard as strengths by those masses that have been overfed on schlocky alt-rock. And lead singer Ben Gibbard (the guy who married Zooey D), who seems to have shed his perpetual beer belly, is genuinely hard to dislike, especially in our recent interview. Naturally, the band seems to get huger and huger with every new record. So, while TOC basically panned the band's recent album, I think perhaps I should give it another chance. After all, the fans online are giving it five friggin' stars. In any case, dig into these shots from the band's UIC gig last week.
