Morrissey had meant to kick off his current U.S. tour in Chicago back in November, but visa issues with a band member shuffled the gig to the back end of the deck and turned it into a kind of pre-holiday Brit-pop experience. Reports from the internet field and Twitter on Saturday's gig suggest it was very good with the Smiths tunes such as "I Want the One I Can't Have," "Still Ill" (recently reissued in remastered version in a box) sounding particularly nice and various solo material such as "Maladjusted" turning out nicely. Highlights included animal rights video backdrops for "Meat is Murder," covering "Satellite of Love," Morrissey commenting on a potential U.S. Iraq invasion as a case of "penis envy" and Moz stripping his shirt off and jumping into the crowd bashfully. None of those items have been fact-checked, mind you.
It's okay to be a show-off.
