Best Coast says “I Love L.A.” in a touristy way. Sigur Rós crafts another slow postcard for Iceland.

“The Only Place”
When the Dodgers knock one out of the park, the stadium PA blasts “I Love L.A.” Randy Newman shouts, “Look at that mountain! / Look at those trees.…” They probably cut it off before he gets to, “Look at that bum over there, man / He’s down on his knees.” Civic pride allows Angelenos to overlook the song’s sarcasm. Newman loves L.A. on some level, but enough to take the piss out of it. Bethany Cosentino, on the other hand, writes about her native Southern California like a tourist. The Best Coast beach bunny rhymes “babes” with “waves” over a stoned jangle that has the twang of a landlocked state. It sounds like an old Belly B-side. “When we’re bored we like to sit around and stare / At the mountains / At the trees,” Cosentino drawls. What about the asphyxiating smog that makes such stunning sunsets? Alas, this dull postcard sentiment of a tune doesn’t come with visual distractions. It’s as lethargic as, well, baseball. Let us know when David Lee Roth decides to cover it.
