“My Love Is Real”
Divine Fits
It’s hard to get behind these indie supergroups. Sub Pop’s Islands–Man Man meet-up Mister Heavenly made waves a couple of years back, abetted by guest bassist Michael Cera. Now we get Divine Fits, which joins Spoon’s Britt Daniel with Dan Boeckner, who’s got some free time on his hands with Wolf Parade on hiatus and Handsome Furs kaput. New Bomb Turks drummer Sam Brown is the third wheel here, because the question remains, like with Mister Heavenly, how these two paragons of indie cool can squeeze their egos into one trio. “My Love Is Real” is our first taste, a chilly, minimal debut that takes the trot perfected by Spoon and adds eerie synth cross-hatching. The dreary new-wave thumbprint we’ll chalk up to Brit producer Nick Launay. In his best Ian McCulloch, a warbling Boeckner professes the titular sentiment, with a caveat: “until it stops.” It’s at that moment that you expect Daniel to drop his signature pout and crack a smile, even if the shades stay on.
