Beyoncé’s kid sister goes indie. Odd Future’s DJ whips up a quiet storm.

“Give It Time”
The Internet
It’s been about a year since Odd Future’s Syd the Kid revealed her smooth R&B alter ego, which continues to prompt as much head-scratching as it did back then. Yet Sydney Bennett, an out lesbian entrenched in an outfit oozing with misogyny, seems to revel in the contradiction, not unlike Frank Ocean. The difference is that Syd is somewhat of an enigma—she’s the unsung member of that posse, literally. Her voice is never heard in OF, where she’s credited as DJ, producer and engineer, so you’d never know she’s got a gorgeous set of pipes, silken and unblemished. Why she’s been hiding it remains as much of a mystery as why she and co-member/producer Matt Martians went with the name the Internet. But the two continue to play it coy. “Give It Time” nods to smooth ’90s neo-soul with jazzy guitar noodling, watery Wurlitzer chords, supple bass and Syd’s breathy harmonies. It’s with the wink of an eye that she and Martians summon nostalgia for Netscape.
