“Bang”
Rye Rye feat. M.I.A.
With “Paper Planes” a zeitgeisty smash, pop stars are taking M.I.A.’s maternity leave as a chance to fill the gap and rebottle the Sri Lankan’s lightning. If Baltimore’s Rye Rye has made a blatant knockoff of the Grammy-nominated hit—complete with gunshot samples—at least she’s officially endorsed by M.I.A., and the first signing to her N.E.E.T. label. Ms. Arulpragasam pops up on the track, too, offering her best impression of a 9mm, spitting “bang” ad nauseam. Drums rat-a-tat accordingly, racing through the exhausting motions of the Charm City’s indigenous sound—B-more Club. The toddler-voiced, teenage Rye taunts, “Catch up!” This brash, brusque juke workout impatiently puts Rob Base’s “It Takes Two” on FFW, with nothing to offer but lazy links to other singles—perfect Twitter pop.
