“Dear God”
Monsters of Folk
At least Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and M. Ward had a sense of humor in naming their supergroup. The misnomer is the most amusing thing about this unfortunate R&B project. Oh, yes, believe it—this is a blue-eyed, baby-making slow jam, as the three somewhat Muppet-voiced frontmen croon over a gospel-funk sample. The crispy break and strummed harp would be killer under an MC. But this is creepier than upper-lip hair that won’t quite grow. Oberst erotically croaks, “Dear God, I wish that I could touch you.” Guuh. Are there cold showers in heaven?
