This week's cover story: the Brunch Issue
Nightwood Doughnuts
Here's what's coming up on newsstands in tomorrow's Time Out Chicago magazine:
Up until about a month ago, I hated brunch. The hour-long wait when I was already hungry, grumpy and hungover. The underwhelming Velveeta-engorged omelettes. The weak mimosas. But in researching this package (and by researching, I mean eating a lot of brunch), and listening to the wisdom of our other brunch-package contributors—Julia Kramer, David Tamarkin, Marissa Conrad and Heather Shouse—I have a new appreciation for the morning tradition.
Julia taught me I'd been going to all the wrong brunch spots (we nominate 20 places that serve innovative dishes in a tranquil environment). David showed me how to avoid waiting at packed places like Lula Cafe. Marissa suffered the terrible task of having to uncover tasty brunch cocktails, just so I don't have to drink another saccharine mimosa. And from my hard-hitting investigation, I learned that when I'm sick of pancakes, waffles and other typical brunch accoutrement, I can always eat poutine or a red velvet–encased bacon sausage. With brunch choices like that, what's not to love?
