Small—but awesome—wine lists
Restaurants and bars with as little as three wines on their lists.
These restaurants and bars have short wine lists, some offering as few as three vinos. But that doesn’t mean the owners don’t care about wine—they’re just sure about what you should be drinking.
The menu at this cozy Filipino chicken joint offers three whites and two reds, ranging from dry to juicy, plus a dry sparkler and pink bubbly. All are easy-drinking and food-friendly, but we pick the latter as the perfect pairing with chef-owner Kristine Subido’s marinated, grilled bird.
The Barrelhouse Flat
Cocktails are king at Stephen Cole’s sophisticated lounge, but the half-dozen wines couldn’t be more interesting. Among them: a picpoul blanc from France’s famed Languedoc, a complexly fruity mencia from Spain’s Galicia region and a chardonnay/pinot bubbly blend from New Mexico.
Publican Quality Meats
The Publican may be a beer hall, but its namesake deli/butcher shop doesn’t neglect winos. One Off Hospitality Group (also behind Big Star, Blackbird and Avec) manages to cover all bases with a tiny list that’s both varied and affordable. Pretty French bubbly, dry rosé and a jammy cab/merlot blend are just $6 a glass…probably the smallest sum you’ve ever contributed to this empire.
