Tracking history
Construction date 1893, demolished in 1949. All usable components—platform girders, newer lumber, doors, railings—were reclaimed for other stations.
Back then… The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition—and a population increase of 600,000 during that decade—led to overcrowding in this area, which already contained Chicago’s first African-American settlement (1830s) and immigrants from the 1840s Irish potato famine.
Last renovation A new station was built in May 2012.
The O factor One reason for the new station was significant residential growth. Another was its proximity to Harpo Studios, which drew up to 1,000 people per day before talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey aired her final episode in May 2011.—Julia Borcherts
