Noyes is one of those sleepy fly-over Purple Line stops, seeming to exist only for Northwestern kids and stage junkies heading to Piven Theatre. Stealthily, it is the sandwich hub of Evanston. Al’s Deli (914 Noyes St, Evanston, 847-475-9400), a family institution with an East Coast feel, has been open since the 1940s. The menu’s best bites marry bread and cheese, with veggie options melting creamy Brie, Havarti, Jarlsberg and Gruyère in baguettes. Or, wash a Herkimer (a New York cheddar) down with a cold can of Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray. The adjacent Rollin to Go (910 Noyes St, Evanston, 847-332-1000) boasts a similar vibe, serving a couple of dozen varieties of Italian hoagies. Take it from someone with a ridiculously long name ending in a vowel: You want the ones crammed with the most peppers, muzzarell ’ and sauce, like the muffuletta, which also boasts the holy trinity of Italian cold cuts: prosciutto, salami and capicola.
