Lush West Town | Bar review
A standout wine store is also a standout wine bar.
This wine bar doesn’t have a wine list. In fact, once you’ve perused the bottles in the adjoining wine store, tasted samples at the bar and chatted with the down-to-earth staff, the idea of ordering wine from a mere “list” feels like a fairly banal way to choose what you’re about to drink. After a Lush lady (they are always ladies, what can I say?) has opened and poured your bottle is the time you’ll actual need a list: a menu, curated by “director of snacks” Kelly Cosgrove. Here you’ll find sandwiches (beef-lobster Wellington), cured meats, beautiful cheeses and my favorite, crispy fried chickpeas scented with truffle oil. I hate truffle oil, and I ate an entire bowl of these chickpeas. FYI: There’s no wine by the glass here (part of the reason I postponed visiting since the snacks launched last fall). You’d think you’d miss it, but you can get a terrific bottle of wine here for the price of a glass elsewhere, and it doesn’t cost extra to drink it on the premises—a very un-wine bary thing.
