Miller’s Pub

Tom & Jerry

Like many old-school drinks, a genuine Tom & Jerry is a pain in the ass to make. Warming and thick like a spiced latte, but with booze standing in for espresso, a properly prepared version requires vigorously whisking together egg yolks, sugar and a lot of spices. Egg whites are whisked separately until they form stiff peaks, then folded in gently. Next, a few ounces of the pancake-like batter is dropped into mugs with a big splash of rum, whiskey, brandy or all three, plus hot milk. Michael Rubel at the Violet Hour (1520 N Damen Ave, 773-252-1500) says the bar will make the cocktail ($12) only if there are at least three inches of snow on the ground. Don’t feel like waiting outside with a ruler? Head to Loop stalwart Miller’s Pub (134 S Wabash Ave, 312-263-4988) for its version ($6.50).
