On the table: TABLE fifty-two
Get out your gratitude journal. After a year of buzz surrounding the possibility of Art Smith (better known as Oprah's chef) having his own restaurant, TABLE fifty-two is actually opening its doors this coming Tuesday, July 24. The smiley, Southern, Paula Deen-plus-testosterone chef is putting his restaurant smack-dab in the Gold Coast so that Ms. O, Gail and every visiting middle-aged TV-watcher can grab a meal and still be a poodle-toss away from the Mag Mile. The menu is decidedly down-home: squash-onion casserole, three-cheese mac, skillet corn bread, fruit buckles and buttermilk-fried chicken are enough to get our carb-lovin' asses in the door, while a handful of la-di-da dishes like organic field greens with late-harvest riesling dressing and pea risotto with soy beans, baby bok choy and mung bean sprouts should satiate the tight-faced. TABLE fifty-two will start out serving dinner only, but will soon add breakfast, lunch and tea service. Smith is hoping to get his liquor license by next week, but call ahead because they'll be BYOB if it doesn't come through.
