Who cares about Valentine's Day when there are empanadas to eat? No one. At least, that's the hope of the three native Argentineans behind catering company 5411 Empanadas, who will unveil their latest endeavor, a baby blue truck serving gourmet Argentinean empanadas and cookies, in the Loop on Monday.
5411 will serve six flavors of the flaky, savory pastries ($1.99 each): beef, ham and cheese, spinach and cheese, caramelized onions, BBQ chicken, and corn—all of which are baked (not deep fried) at Kitchen Chicago.
Without a storefront (they’re looking), Arlia says that most Chicagoans don’t know what an empanada is. “We’re just trying to put them on the streets, literally,” he says.
And if you’re wondering about their name, “54” is the international calling code for Argentina and “11” is the city of Buenos Aires.
Empanada fiends can check out 5411empanadas.com or Twitter (@5411empanadas) for schedules and locations, which are still to be announced.
