"Green" Jewel-Osco opens in Lakeview
The third-ever “green” Jewel-Osco opened to the public today in Lakeview, joining the stores already in place on the South Side and in the Fulton River District. Like its sister stores, the new Jewel at 3630 Southport Avenue is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Silver LEED certification requires a checklist of “green” features, including a “green” roof with growing vegetation, energy saving LED lighting, water saving faucets and fixtures, recycled construction materials, and off-site monitoring of all energy systems. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday as Jewel-Osco donated $2,500 to the Lakeview Pantry for hunger relief.
In addition to the “green” elements, the new Jewel is more than twice as large as the old one that stood in its place for thirty years. It includes a CK Grill with tables and chairs and chef preparing hot meals, a sushi bar, olive and salad bars, and a kosher meat-cutting room (not to mention the expanded kosher selection with meats, baked goods, and Israeli wine). There is a new full-service pharmacy and an underground parking garage.
Chicago Alderman Tom Tunney (44th) lent his support for the upgrade, saying “Jewel-Osco has more than doubled the size of the store, bringing more jobs to our community as well as convenient parking, and the revitalized streetscape will enhance the pedestrian experience on Southport Avenue.” The new “green” Jewel-Osco is now open at 3630 Southport between Waveland and Addison.
