Alderman Proco Joe channels Eliot Ness, busts up illicit nightclub
Chicago Alderman Proco Joe Moreno details in his latest e-mail newsletter how he's taking a stand against the underground nightclub scene in his ward. It's kind of like an episode of "The Untouchables," with Moreno in the Eliot Ness role. The alderman won't pinpoint the exact location of this modern-day speakeasy in his First Ward, because, as he said on Twitter, the "investigation is still ongoing." But read on for his thrilling account, complete with the sections he bolded:
"Last Friday night, when I was on one of my monthly ride-a-longs with the Police Commander of the 14th District, we responded to calls that I had received about an illegal nightclub on Milwaukee Avenue.
"Commander Flores and I arrived at the business, which holds a restaurant license, around midnight to find a de facto nightclub.
"The kitchen was not operational, there were no chefs making food and there were empty bottles of liquor scattered around the venue.
"I made the decision to shut this establishment down immediately.
"Within minutes we had ten officers on the scene to clear out the people.
"The promoter and I exchanged some heated words, as I made it clear that he would not be promoting this sort of event in the 1st Ward, ever again.
"Making the 1st Ward safer is my most important responsibility and I will continue to respond to the needs of my constituents."
