The lyonnaise salad is flawless, the roasted chicken is juicy and the steak frite is spot-on. And yet Brasserie fails to feel like the bustling Paris establishments from which it takes its name. Chalk that up to the dopey, lackluster service and the mod, lonely room that does little to express the warmth of the current brasserie style of cooking. Traveling businesspeople staying in the Essex Hotel may find Brasserie useful, because (save the dry bread pudding), this place would more than sate their requirements for a dinner for one. Sentient locals, however, need more than just solid food to keep them happy.
