The guys behind Fifty/50 opened this seasonal “literal farm-to-table restaurant” on the rooftop above their pizzeria, Roots. The setting, complete with a lush meadow and vertical vegetable garden, is magical; chef John Wayne Formica’s food is not. Truffle-perfumed potato puree shaped like cannoli, lamb formed into falafel-like balls and a toxically boozy chocolate cake topped with a strip of bacon all straddle the line between goofy and weird. Go for the smooth-bodied cocktails, simple salads and fork-tender beer-braised beef instead.
