The story behind Salatino’s is a sweet one: Chefs Jimmy Bannos and Scott Harris teamed up with Mary Jo Gennaro to revive her classic, eponymous restaurant that for 50 years thrived on Taylor Street. Legal matters prevented the restaurateurs from using the name Gennaro’s, but the restaurant’s menu (and ostensibly the feel) has been replicated exactly. It remains to be seen if this is a good thing, as the classic Italian-American food never quite hits a home run (the sausage and peppers comes the closest; meanwhile, the housemade pastas strike out completely). Of course, it’s possible that people went to Genarro’s—and thus come to Salatino’s—more for the atmosphere and familial service. If that’s the case, they won’t be disappointed.
