Paul Zakopane-Harnas Restaurant

While the owner of this restaurant hails from the city of Zakopane in the south of Poland, much of his menu falls under the rubric of American diner classics: omelettes, hamburgers and grilled cheese are all available at prices that seem as though they’ve remained untouched since the Soviet era. Take a cue from the regulars (and everyone in this relatively cheery restaurant is a regular), and venture into the Polish part of the menu with crêpes filled with light farmer’s cheese or a plate of crispy, oversize potato pancakes served with what you know to expect in an old-school Central European restaurant—applesauce and sour cream—and the one thing you don’t: a smile.
