Sofia is moving...to Malibu?

Posted in #Chicago blog by Kevin Aeh on May 30, 2012 at 5:48pm

Sofia (72 E Oak St, 312-640-0878) can't seem to stay in one place for too long. The popular Gold Coast shop originally opened in 2009 as Sofia Vintage, a by-appointnment vintage showroom around the Clark and Division area. A year or so later, owner Ashely Zisook moved the shop to Oak Street and dropped the Vintage (in name only), mixing in current season designer items. As she told us in 2010, "I couldn't just style people in head-to-toe vintage." And it looks like the store is evolving again. Starting June 4, the shop is having a moving sale. Everything in the store's lower level is marked 50% off. So where is the shop moving to? At the moment, it remains unclear. The store's rep tells me Sofia will open a new location in Chicago, but is tightlipped on the when and where. (Any guesses? I kind of hope it remains downtown. It's nice having a hip, indie boutique steps away from the typical chains.) In the meantime, Sofia is taking a summer roadtrip to Malibu, California. The shop is partnering with musician Cisco Adler (Schwayze) and his brand, Bananabeat for a July and August pop-up shop at the Malibu Country Mart. Hopefully the west coast pop-up shop won't delay Sofia's next plans for Chicago. I'm sure a lot of Chicago shoppers can't imagine a summer without Sofia.
