Behind Chicago fashion: Jena Gambaccini
I started my blog… December 2009. My first post was about Rachel Zoe (I was obsessed with her at the time…kind of embarrassing). I started a blog thinking no one would ever read it, but I just wanted to somehow get my fashion-related thoughts down. I didn’t even tell anyone about ChiCityFashion for the first 3 months I had it!
My day job is… ChiCityFashion as well as Social Media/Marketing Consulting.
Why my blog is popular Well if you really want to know you can ask my readers, but from what I’ve been told…the reason why people like my blog is the reason I thought people wouldn’t – I write how I speak. I don’t have a fancy vocabulary, I didn’t study fashion in college but I have done my research, I have an authentic voice and I wouldn’t do anything to compromise that.
First reader encounter The second time I went to fashion week in New York, so in September 2010 (first time was just for one show in February 2010). It’s crazy that someone in another state knew who I was, considering my blog was very Chicago-focused. Even though I’ve had my blog for over 3 ½ years, I’m still in shock when someone recognizes me.
Most fun collaboration I'd have to say my most fun collaboration was with Anthem Wares. I've mostly partnered with larger companies in the past so it was refreshing to find such a cool up-and-coming brand who wanted to collaborate. They're an online shop that has some of the most unique accessories I've ever come across so I'm very thankful they approached me to partner...now I have a new favorite place to buy accessories. I think the photoshoot speaks for itself!
The celebrity I want to read my blog Jack and Lazaro of Proenza Schouler. I talk about them/their brand enough so they’d either be flattered or extremely creeped out. Either way, I can say they read ChiCityFashion ☺
Best reader comment Not one specifically but just when people tell me they started doing something because of me (whether they started using a beauty product I suggested, purchased from a designer I praised, etc). Just inspiring people to think about fashion beyond shopping and more about how clothing, accessories (and even beauty products) make you feel is the most important thing to me. I don’t get all serious very often but I truly believe in the power of getting dressed…and when you look good, you feel good. It’s as simple as that.
Other blogs I read I read mostly fashion news websites like Refinery29, The Cut and WhoWhatWear. Some local blogs I enjoy are See Jane and Sequins and Stripes. And I’m totally addicted to BuzzFeed.
Trend I wish would go away Sneaker wedges. I’ve mentioned how much I dislike them in more than half of my blog posts I’ve created since the trend started. Sneakers are great and I love a good wedge but together they are just hideous. Toss your wedge sneakers now. You’ll thank me later.
My top three must-have products Bobbi Brown under-eye corrector (literally changed my life, considering under eye circles have always haunted me), Proenza Schouler PS1 (just the ultimate effortless carryall…and happens to be by my favorite designer) and Ginger + Liz nailpolish (I’ve been posting #manimonday on Instagram for about 2 years now and many of those have been made possible by G+L’s awesome polish colors).
