Inn style

Don't worry about hailing a hard-to-find taxi in Logan Square. Stumble upstairs to (finally open!) Longman & Eagle's sleeping rooms.

Inn style
  • Co-owner McAdams and his partner at Mode Carpentry, John Martin, made all of the furnishings with reclaimed wood, mostly sourced from the two apartments originally occupying the space where the inn now resides.

  • A mix of reading material—novels from local indie publisher Featherproof Books, poetry by Gertrude Stein and Chicago rags, such as the Logan Square Literary Review—is featured in every room.

  • Glass doors on the shower and bathroom leave the rooms feeling open, but don’t count on total privacy. Prudes can head downstairs to the restaurant’s W.C.

Details such as hanging terrariums, the noose-like rope used to hang toilet paper rolls (for the rooms with European-style baths) and wooden beer cases that double as nightstands lend an organic, rustic feel to every room.

  • In addition to showcasing Hudson’s text-based prints, every room displays local art, such as Stephen Eichorn’s floral wall installation, Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi’s wall of music poster art and Nicola Kuperus’ photograph of a girl fallen off a bike.

Who else than the dream-team behind Longman & Eagle’s inn—Empty Bottle owner Bruce Finkelman, artist Cody Hudson, concert producer Peter Creig Toalson and musician-turned-carpenter Robert McAdams—would think to offer free tokens for whiskey tasting to their overnight guests? There are plenty of reasons to spend the night at this six-bedroom inn, even for locals, not least of which is the luxury of crawling upstairs after making your way through the 40-whiskey-strong drinking program at the downstairs bar/restaurant. Not to mention, the privilege of making an otherwise unavailable dinner reservation. Think of it as crashing at your friend’s place that happens to have awesome local art, an Apple TV in every room, and a raid-able minibar stocked with Vosges chocolates and Coppo wine for 4am snacking. Oh, and if you thought you were leaving empty-handed, think again. Every guest who stays in one of the large rooms featuring vintage cassette consoles walks away with a special mix-tape compiled by folks such as Miles Raymer, Sam Prekop and Jason Lazarus. Visit the Inn at Longman & Eagle at 2657 N Kedzie Ave (773-276-7110, longmanandeagle.com). Rates start at $75/night for small rooms and $225 for large rooms. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi.
