2 Sisters brings affordable women’s clothing to Chicago’s North Center neighborhood.
2 Sisters Boutique opens in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood; everything in the women’s shop is under $100.
Gina O’Donnell and her sister, Elaina Bonacci, loved having their store, 2 Sisters, in the West Loop. But after a couple of years, they wanted their shop to be in an area that has more of a neighborhood vibe. “It seems like no one is planting roots in the West Loop,” O’Donnell says. “They buy a condo and then get married and move away.” She has a point; even Oprah has left the ’hood.
The sisters opened their first shop in Park Ridge (it’s still open) about five years ago on a whim. After O’Donnell lost her job with communications company MCI, she went to dinner with her sister. “We had a bottle of wine and she asked me what I was going to do next,” she says. They talked about their shared love of accessories and clothes, and decided the timing was right to open a store. The next day, they found a space and opened the first 2 Sisters within three months. “It was a split decision and we haven’t looked back since,” O’Donnell says.
A couple of years after opening that original outpost, the duo opened a second location in the West Loop, which they felt was on the brink of becoming a shopping destination. The West Loop never really became a bustling retail area, though, and the sisters decided to move the second location to North Center earlier this year, where they’ve been welcomed with open arms. “The area needed a women’s clothing shop,” O’Donnell says.
The key to the shop’s success: Everything is less than $100. In fact, price tags for many of the items (especially the accessories) fall below $50. “We love to be the type of place where you can stop in after work and pick up something before you go out that night,” O’Donnell says. Clothing is sorted by occasion. You’ll find racks of casual clothes, going-out tops, dresses you’d wear to a wedding and so on. The shop mostly features clothes from L.A. showrooms, so the vibe here has a sort of West Coast, Real Housewives of Orange County–but-younger feel. “If you love our style,” O’Donnell says, “you could build your whole wardrobe here.” 3828 N Lincoln Ave (773-525-7999, shop2sisters.com).
