Merz Apothecary
To say this 137-year-old business has roots in Chicago is an understatement. Three generations of Merzes ran the original shop (selling mostly German-centric household remedies and herbal teas) in Lakeview until 1972, when it was bought by Abdul Qaiyum, then a pharmacist. In 1982, he relocated the store to Lincoln Square and expanded its stock to include bath, body and homeopathic products. Since then, Abdul’s son, Anthony, has come on board, and the shop opened a second location within Macy’s State Street before moving to the Palmer House Hilton. Judging by the popularity of this store on a Saturday afternoon, it’s safe to say it’ll be around for at least another 137 years. 17 E Monroe St (312-781-6900); 4716 N Lincoln Ave (773-989-0900).—Kevin Aeh
