FOR BOTH
Gaultier 2 by Jean Paul Gaultier
Main ingredients Vanilla, amber and musk.
What we smell A strange hint of butterscotch. This unisex scent is neither masculine nor feminine; it’s just pretty bad.
Perfect for Couples on the rocks.
$55–$85 at www.sephora.com

FOR HIM
1. Antidote by Viktor & Rolf
Main ingredients Mint leaves, black pepper, cinnamon, sandalwood and patchouli.
What we smell Lots of pepper, but it thankfully doesn’t make us sneeze. There’s also a powdery vibe going on.
Perfect for Sophisticated dudes with a soft side.
$90 at Saks Fifth Avenue

2. Driven by Derek Jeter for Avon
Main ingredients Crushed leaves, black pepper, chilled grapefruit rhubarb and Gatorade.
What we smell A scent almost exactly like Bath & Body Works Cool Spring daily refresher. We can’t imagine the Yankees’ locker room smelling this fresh.
Perfect for A younger guy buying cologne for the first time.
Available in November at www.avon.com

3. Prada pour homme
Main ingredients Amber and a fern tonality. What we smell It’s a clean scent that reminds us of old-fashioned shaving soaps.
Perfect for A classy gent of a certain age.

FOR BOTH4. Fumerie Turque by Serge Lutens
Main ingredients White honey, candied Turkish rose, Egyptian jasmine and smoked leather.
What we smell The leather and honey, which create an unconventional and oddly comforting mix. We can’t help but think of our grandmothers.
Perfect for Women who don’t want to go the floral-perfume route, or men willing to take a scent risk.
$92 coming soon to Barneys New York, 25 E Oak St at Rush St (312-587-1700)

FOR HER5. Burberry Brit and Brit Crystal
Main ingredients Magnolia, black currant, amber, vanilla and sandalwood.
What we smell Vanilla and sandalwood, which are definitely accounted for here. It’s a sweet, yet strong, almost masculine smell. The limited-edition Crystal comes in parfum concentration in Baccarat crystal, but it’s the same fragrance.
Perfect for Take-charge women, like female rugby players.
Brit Crystal, $800; and Brit, $62–$82, at Burberry, 633 N Michigan Ave at Ontario St (312-787-2500).

6. Estée Lauder Pleasures, Gwyneth Paltrow edition

What we smell Roses. Lots of roses. The bottle reminds us of that bubblegum-pink number Paltrow wore when she won her Oscar.
Perfect for Young, preppy moms or, uh, Gwyneth Paltrow.
