Dress the part
Four boutique owners decode the unwritten instructions of what to wear at four types of weddings.
And what about guys?
When to wear…
…a tie Definitely at a night wedding. You can get away with not wearing one to an indoor day ceremony—as long as you’re wearing a sharp suit.
…a dark-colored suit Always at an evening wedding. Dark colors (navy, gray or black) also work in the day, but lighten it up with a warmer-colored shirt or tie.
…a light-colored suit Never at night. But a light-colored suit can work at a day wedding, especially if it’s outdoors. Save seersucker for a beach or more exotic destination wedding.
…a tuxedo Only if the invitation says “black tie.” You don’t want to be more dressed up than the groom.
…a kilt If you’re the groom and you’re full-blooded Scottish or getting married in Scotland.
