Don't miss these four shops during your afternoon in the North Side 'hood.
The Denim Lounge
One of the stars of Roscoe Village (after all, it did just win a Reader’s Choice award for Best Denim Shop), this high-end denim destination takes jeans shopping very seriously. Need proof? Two words: butt cam. Yes, this is where you’ll find a virtual fitting room that connects four hi-def cameras to flat-screen TVs, so you can see just how good those Rich & Skinny jeans look on you. 2004 W Roscoe St (773-935-2820, madisonandfriends.com/denimlounge).
Glam to Go
Need a gift for the lady in your life, or just a little something for yourself? Look no further than Glam. Super-friendly owner Jenny Flynn stocks her shop with a variety of bath and body products, soaps and candles. You’ll also find makeup and jewelry by designers such as Dame Designs, Kevia and Leila. Don’t forget to stop by the shop’s beauty bar for free samples. 2002 W Roscoe St (773-525-7004, glamtogo.com).
Hard Boiled Records & Videos
This store is so serious about music that it closed the weekend of the Pitchfork festival so employees could attend the fest (and work the Hard Boiled booth, natch). Pop inside the small shop and you’ll find a mix of records, with a focus on indie artists such as Arcade Fire and local band tenniscourts . Even though videos is still part of its name, Hard Boiled hasn’t carried VHS (or DVDs) for years. 2008 W Roscoe St (773-755-2619, hardboiledrecords.blogspot.com).
You won’t be shampooed or styled at this no-frills salon, but when you’re scoring a cut for as low as $10, you don’t have much room to complain. Plus, getting a cut here is a rite of passage for every North Sider. Arrive early, as Big Hair doesn’t take appointments. Just do a little shopping while you wait. 2012 W Roscoe St (773-348-0440, bighairchicago.com).
