Yamuna Body Rolling
WHAT A BALL Don’t let the sound of squeaking balls deter you from giving the Spa at Trump’s Yamuna Body Rolling class a try. As instructor Mary Fazio passes me a firm ball (slightly smaller than one used for soccer) and begins demonstrating how to use it to stretch and strengthen my body, I wonder how I’m going to get through the next 90 minutes without completely zoning out. But after sitting on the sphere, rolling it around my sit bones and under my hamstrings, I understand the appeal: My tightness from pounding the treadmill on a recent run begins to dissipate. I don’t even mind that the ball ekes out unseemly sounds as it massages my backside. When we get to my upper back, I can feel my rib cage expand, my sinuses open and my shoulders drop. (Fazio claims she grew one and a half inches after a weekend workshop practicing Yamuna, an effect of creating space between the vertebrae.) Utilizing her vast knowledge of anatomy from 27 years of practicing massage therapy, she helps us deepen the stretches by using the weight of our bodies. While I never break a sweat, my entire core and legs quiver as I maneuver the ball up and down my thighs while holding the plank position. By the end, when Fazio dims the lights, I close my eyes and slip into a meditative state. Thursdays at 7:30am and Sundays at 9:30am. Free to the Spa at Trump members; $30–$45 per class for guests.
