Trisha Kaufman at Tsubo
Street cred After earning her chops as a student at Pivot Point and educator with U.K.-based hairdressing chain Toni&Guy, Trisha Kaufman broke out on her own in 2002 to open her first salon, XS, in West Town. After closing XS, Kaufman migrated south to the Kinzie industrial corridor to start her now-three-year-old, eight-stylist-strong salon, Tsubo. “[I] can see what personality someone’s hair has,” says Kaufman, “and if you find a haircut that suits your personality, it’s always going to be good.”
Why she loves her Following the recommendation of a friend, TOC associate photo editor Nicole Radja has been going to Kaufman for as long as Tsubo has been around. Echoing Kaufman’s own sentiments, Radja says, “I feel like [Trisha] understands me as a person, from the way she talks to me to the way she cuts my hair. And I know I’m not going to see five other people [on the street] with my same cut,” which is a notable feat, considering Radja requests a new style with nearly every visit. It doesn’t hurt that the salon, situated inside a loft, feels a tad under the radar.
Haircuts by Trisha Kaufman start at $65 at Tsubo, 1821 W Hubbard St, suite 201 (312-492-8490, tsubochicago.com).
