Ask for a gift receipt
“It depends on the gift and the giver,” says etiquette expert Anna Post (she’s also the great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post). “If it’s the wrong size or color, there’s your excuse,” she says. If you have a good relationship with your gift giver, Post says, just ask for the receipt. Otherwise, she says you’re stuck with the present. “I’m not a fan of the little white lie,” she adds. “You tend to get caught.” If you’re in this position, you can always regift (find guidelines at emilypost.com) and in the future, be better about dropping hints for the items you really want.
