“There’s a bakery on Belmont called Bittersweet (1114 W Belmont Ave, 773-929-1100). I just stopped there on Saturday and got some molasses cookies that I intended to give to somebody else and I ate them all.”

“I teach [adult] tap classes at the Emerald City Theatre School (2933 N Southport Ave, 773-529-2690) on Monday and Tuesday nights. Those are two nights I look forward to because I get to put my tap shoes on rather than sit in front of the computer writing a grant. It’s a very fun space. Bright colors, a lot of stuff related to The Wizard of Oz, cool murals.”

Las Tablas (2942 N Lincoln Ave, 773-871-2414) is a Colombian restaurant, and I highly recommend the churrasco [a char-broiled, butterfly-cut New York strip steak]. The empanadas are excellent, too!”

“I go to Papacito’s (2960 N Lincoln Ave, 773-327-5240) for lunch way too often. It’s a Mexican restaurant with some booths and a small outdoor café. My favorite there is the chicken soup with rice. It’s spicy; it’s delicious. They also have goat cheese nachos that are pretty spectacular.”

“I’m not a big shopper. Wait, wait, that’s not true! I like the Army and Navy Surplus Store (3100 N Lincoln Ave, 773-348-8930). I started going in there when we were doing a Fourth of July concert and we needed some military costumes…but they have so much more.”

Lane Alexander has lived “right at Montrose Harbor” for two years—and has been to the waterfront once. “I go home [only] to sleep,” says Alexander, who arranges tap concerts and grants dancer scholarships as cofounder and director of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project. “My true neighborhood is West Lakeview, around the Athenaeum [Theatre], where I work.” The internationally acclaimed dancer has been logging even more time in the office lately to get ready for the 21st annual Rhythm World, CHRP’s two-week festival of tap and percussive performances, classes and exhibits (begins Monday 25). When Alexander manages to leave his desk, here’s where he heads.
