What's up with that?
QWhat’s up with the bike rack on the drawbridge at Wacker Drive and State Street? Isn’t that not the safest place to lock up?
A The bike rack isn’t installed on the bridge, actually; it’s on the deck of Wacker Drive, about 20 feet north of the intersection. It was installed as part of the Wacker Drive reconstruction project in 2001–02, during which bike racks were placed at almost every intersection on Wacker from State Street west to Randolph Street. “Some corners have one, some have two…whenever we do any reconstruction projects, we look for opportunities to install new bike racks,” says Brian Steele of the Chicago Department of Transportation. “Chicago has more than 10,000 bike racks, more than any city in the country.” Steele says that anyone can submit a request for a bike rack at a certain location by visiting chicagobikes.org. While you won’t see your bike go airborne if you park it on a Wacker rack in the near future, you might have the opportunity to see the bridge go up—the bridge-lift season begins Saturday 21.— Leah Pietrusiak
