Domestic blast

Why go out when the good times can come to you? Enjoy your typical weekend of booze, food and friends all in the comfort of your home.

Ax marks the spot

Throw a bloody great Shining viewing party.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Truer words were never spoken (or typed prerampage), and this sage advice applies to you whether your name is Jack or not. This movie may be the ultimate warning against the dangers of isolation, winter, haunted mountain resorts and work—perfect for your hibernation weekend! A masterpiece like The Shining deserves a party, and the party should show your guests a wonderful time even as they get the crap scared out of them.

Decorations Don’t worry about running to the store before the shindig: The friendly folks at Doolin’s (511 N Halsted St, 800-350-4870) should be able to help you gather supplies. Call and have them deliver blood-red paper plates ($4), red cutlery ($1.29) and red napkins ($3). For the New Year’s Eve party scene in the movie, splurge on the Midnight Assortment for 50, a kit of hats, noisemakers, tiaras and more ($37.50).

Drink If the idea of living in a remote lodge during a long, cold winter gives you the chills, warm up with a Rubi Rey rum toddy.

2 oz Rubi Rey rum
1 tsp Sugar
6 oz Boiling water
Add a few drops of red food coloring to get people into the “red rum” spirit.

Drinking game Drink when Danny has flashes of the Shining. Take two drinks every time he sees those creepy-ass twins. Take three shots when the elevators pour blood. Drain your cup every time you lament that Jack Nicholson is now starring in soul-shredding films like The Bucket List.
