FREE Long Grove Apple Festival, Oct 2–4 Long Grove Historic Village, a quarter mile northwest of the intersection of Rts 53 and 83 (starevents.com/apple). 10am–8pm. Village restaurants and food booths celebrate fall’s favorite fruit, including a “make your own taffy apple” booth and an Apple Jam Kids Expo with pony rides, kiddie rides and a kids’ craft tent.

FREE Chicago Country Music Festival, Oct 3, 4 Soldier Field Parkland, 1410 S Museum Dr (chicagocountrymusicfestival.us). Last year the city brought in huge acts like country’s golden girl, Taylor Swift. This year promises more big names and free entertainment.

FREE Eli’s Cheesecake Festival, Oct 3, 4 6701 W Forest Preserve Ave (cheesecakefestival.com). Sat 10–5pm; Sun 11–5pm. With proceeds going to the New Horizon Center and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, buying cheesecake never felt so right. The festival offers live music, an accompanying kiddy fest, a cheesecake-eating contest and a classic car show on Sunday—but more importantly, free samples of Eli’s cheesecake.
