Advice from a job hunter
"Don't beat yourself up," laid-off worker advises.

Diane Sales, 29, Wrigleyville
At the end of March, the ad agency Sales worked at could no longer afford to keep her on staff. Rather than jump into the job market right away—she’s applied to only a handful of jobs—she’s training for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and has tackled home projects.
Biggest challenge “Not giving in to feeling like a failure—useless and hopeless as the time passes. I think it’s okay to feel down when you’re down, to recognize and respect those feelings but not let them own and paralyze you.”
Best piece of advice “Don’t beat yourself up about enjoying some of this time off. The last time I was unemployed, I had a complete stranglehold on my job search. I felt terribly guilty and unproductive for giving myself permission to do anything other than send out résumés all day.”
