Screw the International Olympic Committee: Chicago is the best city on the planet. We boast a gorgeous lakefront, incredible restaurants, shopping to die for…the list goes on. So what’s keeping it from being the top U.S. tourist destination? Soul. Crushing. Weather. The unseasonably cold temps this summer and fall have been especially nerve-fraying.
“Well, we got off on the wrong foot with that wet spring,” explains WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling. He says the heavy rainfall means wet soil, and wet soil means clouds. And clouds mean you never earned that healthy bronzing this summer, the least sunny on record. And then there’s this terrible fall, which Skilling blames on warmer-than-normal water in the North Atlantic creating a buckling in the jet stream…we nodded off right around that point, but he did say something about cold winds from Canada, so let’s just blame our neighbor to the north.
In the meantime Short of building a bubble over Canada, what can we do? Skilling suggests looking on the bright side: “Ozone air pollution decreased this summer, and people saved money on air-conditioning bills.” Great, tell that to our therapists.
