34 things to do this weekend | July 29–31, 2011
ART & DESIGN
Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (Fri 29–Sun 31)
More than 30 art exhibits are among the attractions at this annual showcase for local music, theater, restaurants and food trucks.
"Skewville: Not My Type" (Sat 30)
Though they're probably best known for tossing wooden sneakers over power lines around the world, the Brooklyn-based twins behind Skewville have had a diverse street-art practice for more than a decade. Their new paintings incorporate vintage metal signs. Opens Sat 30, 6–10pm.
"Windows on the War: Soviet TASS Posters at Home and Abroad, 1941-1945" (Sun 31)
TASS, the former USSR's news agency, commissioned this show's 157 posters to drum up support for the Soviet Union during World War II. Discovered in a Department of Prints and Drawings storage area in 1997, the monumental, technically astounding works haven't been displayed for six decades. Photographs and other documentary material put them in cultural and historical context.
