34 things to do this weekend | July 29–31, 2011
Myth & Continent (Fri 29, final weekend)
Named for a subcategory of 122 concrete lawn ornaments sold by New Jersey company Massarelli's, Myth & Continent is Ginger Krebs's latest totally unique, wholly engrossing, proudly odd dance-theater environment. If art reflects its era, the hour-long piece is a particularly well-polished mirror, full of precisely chosen juxtapositions that resonate with those that we experience on a daily basis in our disorienting, disorganized, fractured culture. Running three nights only through Jul 29.
Out of Site: Collaboraction and Environmental Encroachment (Fri 29)
Collaboraction and self-described "magic circus band" Environmental Encroachment team up with James Kennedy, author of The Order of Odd-Fish, to present Dome of Doom. The first event in the performance-art series Out of Site proceeds from the Western to the Damen Blue Line stop, culminating in a 6pm "dance battle" within a geodesic dome at Wicker Park's Polish Triangle.
Thodos Dance Chicago: New Dances Closing Night Cast Party (Sun 31)
Enjoy a buffet and open bar following the closing-night performance of Thodos Dance Chicago's annual choreographic workshop, held at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. Proceeds benefit the program, which lets company dancers create new work for fully staged performance. More information online at thodosdancechicago.org.
