34 things to do this weekend | July 29–31, 2011
Morning Teleportation + Colourmusic (Fri 29)
Portland, Oregon, psych-rock outfit Morning Teleportation has got the manic hooks, the proggy riffs, and the production acumen of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock at its disposal, which leads us to predict good things for the group as long as it can keep it together. Opening are Oklahoma's own young pysch prankster Colourmusic and Oxford, Mississippi's rambling, rolling, trippy and talented Young Buffalo, a band that sounds very of the moment and may therefore have the most potential of the bunch.
Snoop Dogg (Fri 29)
Snoop Dogg called his 2002 album Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss, which was maybe a belated concession he's been coasting off his early rep for years. The guy did start young, though—unbelievably, he's not yet 40—and despite his unlikely mainstream crossover as a sort of live-action Muppet, the guy has never forgotten his audience or its interests. Which, granted, rarely extend beyond getting high, but Snoop's humor and laconic delivery have a way of making even the most quotidian of exploits entertaining.
Brian Wilson (Sat 30)
Up until 2001, Beach Boy and true musical genius Brian Wilson owned a house in St. Charles (hey, everyone must get sick of sunshine every day eventually, right?). His former house is back on the market, but Wilson makes it back to town every now and then, including tonight at the Arcada Theatre, where he and his sympathetic and supportive young band will help him out with everything from his timeless hits to the equally timeless tunes of George Gershwin, which Wilson recently tackled on his aptly named Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin album.
