34 things to do this weekend | July 29–31, 2011
James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) + Shit Robot (Fri 29)
LCD Soundsystem, the band, may be gone, but it is not forgotten. And its frontman, James Murphy, is still as active as ever, deejaying his incisive brand of disco, proto-house and generally DFA-worthy beats to adoring fans. That's what he's up to here, and he's joined by labelmate and longtime pal Marcus Lambkin, a.k.a. soulful technoist Shit Robot.
Lollapalooza Remix Throwdown: Live Finals (Sat 30)
Building on the success of last year's contest, Lollapalooza has again offered the deejaying and producing masses a chance to try their hand at remixing their way onto the DJ stage. Judges include local luminaries A-Cup and Mother Hubbard of Moneypenny, CreamTeam's Veronica Murtagh, Carter Adams of the Windish Talent Agency, TOC nightlife guru Joshua P. Ferguson and contest organizer Dani Deahl. Last year's winner, Craig Williams, kicks off the musical programming, which also includes sets from Moneypenny and former Chicagoans the electro-pop outfit Walter Meego.
House of Sol (Fri 29, Sat 30, Sun 31)
Chicago summers are filled with street fests and stages of music, but none have the dance music–centric focus of this South Side house-music meeting of the minds. The needle drops at 5pm on Thursday and runs straight through until 10pm on Sunday. Lineup highlights include living legends Marshall Jefferson and Gene Hunt, staples like Joshua Iz and Jesse De La Pena, tireless house mainstays John Simmons and Justin Long plus Zebo, DJ Heather, Frique, Ghetto Division's Rob Threezy and some 30 more.
