When he's not busy writing great tunes, Jeff Tweedy is...giving the weather report?
The Nooner: Chicago news and beyond
Today's news features Jeff Tweedy and baby seals. Win-win.
Jeff Tweedy does the weather
A scruffy and bearded Jeff Tweedy, declaring that he had come to offer “supplemental hair,” showed up at WGN to do the weather forecast. Though the Wilco frontman clearly hadn’t prepared any snappy patter for the occasion, he nonetheless charmed. He told viewers “Things could be worse.” Glancing at the seven-day forecast display, he added: “This is how it looks. You can read.”
Whale scientists need your help!
A laboratory that studies orca whale communication (which is quite complex) has found that humans do a better job of matching up similar orca calls than computers can. And they need to match up a ton of orca calls for their research. So they’ve designed a handsome and engaging website, Whale.fm, where the general public can sort through whale sounds. Do it for science! And because it’s a uniquely Zen way to goof off. Just click on the “help” link in the top right section of the main page there and it takes you through a quick-and-easy tutorial. Whale-call-differentiation binge, here I come.
Today is free shipping day
A couple thousand online retailers have agreed to offer free shipping today, so if there’s an item you’ve had your eye on—especially a heavy item!—it’s worth taking a look to see if shipping charges have been waived today. Participating stores include J. Crew (which is offering a discount code for 30 percent off in addition to free shipping) and Lands’ End, which is offering 40 percent off to sweeten the pot. Both deals can be accessed via Free Shipping Day’s website.
Morton’s Steakhouse chain is being sold
The Morton’s Restaurant group announced today that its 77 steakhouses are being acquired, for $116 million, by restaurant operator Landry’s Inc. This means Morton’s will join other Landry’s properties, such as the Rainforest Café and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Let’s hope this doesn’t mean they’re going to add a bunch of animatronic animals to the steakhouses, because that would just be upsetting.
Seal pup puts his flippers up
Only in New Zealand: A seal pup let himself into a woman’s home via the cat door, where he hopped up on the couch and settled in to take a load off his flippers. The fact that the homeowner has both cats and a dog did not stop the bold little seal. This same flippered hooligan had already had some human-related capers, in which he had gotten loose in an animal control van, hopped up to the front seat and turned on the radio. Dude needs his own daytime tv show or something.
