"NATO, shut it down! The war machine, shut it down! The whole damn system, shut it down!" chanted protesters as they marched from Grant Park to McCormick Place on the first day of the NATO Summit, Sunday.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson, alongside a group of veterans planning to "return" their medals, led the march through downtown Chicago to protest the NATO Summit.
An approximately 100-person group of anarchists calling themselves “Black Bloc” participated in the march to McCormick Place to protest the NATO Summit. The five-hour rally and march would eventually end with "Black Bloc" members on the frontlines of an altercation with the Chicago Police Department.
After preaching nonviolence at the NATO rally in Grant Park, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, led the march to McCormick Place alongside a group of veterans planning to "return" their medals.
Forty-five veterans returned medals during Sunday's NATO protest by throwing them back. "If I want to continue to live with integrity, I must get rid of this," said Erica Sloan, who served in the U.S. Air Force.
Three members of Afghans for Peace spoke during the presentation at Cermak and Michigan Avenue, at the end of the peaceful march against NATO. "For what (NATO has) done to my country, I'm outraged! For what you've done to these veterans, I'm outraged!" said one representative.
Following the veterans' presentation, demonstrators were asked to head west towards busses that would take people home. However, following chants of "Nato's east! Nato's east!" members of "Black Bloc" (an anarchist organization) linked arms and marched toward the police barricade.
The Chicago Police Department made several announcements in both Spanish and English warning they might use anti-riot measures."You are hereby ordered to disperse," police said.
