NATO Protest Rally at Grant Park | Photos
On the first day of the NATO Summit, protesters gathered for a peaceful demonstration at Grant Park and the Petrillo Music Shell. As early as 9am, thousands began gathering for the noon rally and 2pm march to McCormick Place.
An organizer for the noon rally at Grant Park and President of the Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda, Andy Thayer, spoke at a press conference before the march to McCormick Place. Other groups, such as Occupy Chicago and Communities United Against Foreclosures and Evictions, also spoke against the NATO Summit at the conference.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson attended the noon rally at Grant Park before marching with demonstrators. He was scheduled to speak last at the rally before leading the march to McCormick Place, alongside war-protesting veterans.
Former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello performed a free concert at Sunday's Grant Park rally. Singing on the ground level in a circle of fans and media, he said, "The PA system doesn't work... They don't want us here, but we won't be stopped."
Groups gathered at Grant Park for a rally on the first day of the NATO Summit and the third day of non-stop protesting in Chicago. The mood was peaceful and almost celebratory as protesters waited for the 2pm march to McCormick Place.
A group called "Bust Up NATO" spoke at the rally. Other speakers included a representative from the United Antiwar Coalition, the National Coalition of Black Lawyers and the Committee to Stop FBI Repression.
The Chicago Police Department gathered on the outskirts of Grant Park, preparing for what would eventually become a march of several thousand protesters down Michigan Avenue.
An approximately 100-person group of anarchists calling themselves “Black Bloc” gathered at Grant Park before the march. The five-hour peaceful rally and march would eventually end with "Black Bloc" members on the frontlines of an altercation with the Chicago Police Department.
