I don't know a ton about cars, but I do know that it doesn't happen very often that one type of car serves as the basis of an entire subculture. One of the rare instances when it has: the lowrider. This is the car that invented cruising. Yeah, it goes that far back.
In honor of this phenomenon's contribution to urban youth culture, the Chicago Urban Art Society recently launched the Slow and Low Lowrider Festival and Exhibit, an annual event which features an exposition of lowrider cars and bicycles, live performances, and official awards for individuals' accomplishments within the movement. Cars on display at the exhibit depicted some ridiculously elaborate images: We noted skulls, crosses and a baseball game. There was also a substantial number of young'uns seemingly getting an early start on training for their driving days, live music from performers like Jesse de la Pena and Rico the Killer Diller, and cars in every color imaginable. The Chicago Urban Art Society says it's proud to be called a cross-platform organization—and by the looks of things, that mindset delivered a major hit at the Lowrider Festival.
