Chicago Air and Water Show | Photos

Whenever I'm downtown while the Air and Water Show is underway, I always have an initial fear that the city is being bombed, thanks to the deafening sounds of military jets overhead. But fear not, fellow Chicagoans—the aircrafts you heard all weekend long were here for your viewing pleasure. For three days each summer, pilots, parachute teams, ship captains and water skiers all gather in downtown Chicago to perform daredevil tricks across the lakefront. This is a Chicago tradition that dates back to 1959, when Lakeshore Park decided to include water skiers, water ballet and a diving competition in their Family Day celebration at the Chicago Park District's day camp. By the next year, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and Golden Knights Parachute Team joined the party—and the rest is history.
Now, the Chicago Air and Water Show is the largest free event of its kind in the states, with audiences regularly reaching the seven digits. This year, the show was headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, who are famous for their precise, artistic, intrepid flying techniques. They were joined by the men and women of the U.S. Navy Parachute Team Golden Knights and the U.S. Navy Parachute Team Leap Frogs. Here are our photos from the big event.
It's okay to be a show-off.
