Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville turns 20
I'm going to be honest. I never cared much for Exile in Guyville. I picked up the cassette in the summer of 1993, because the world (or at least my world) told me I must. It reminded more of a watered down Pavement than the Stones. I listened to it once when doing laundry and didn't think much of it for years until I moved to Chicago and had to get into arguments about it at most parties. I did really enjoy the Winnetka native's following Whip-Smart, though. Next year, remind me to celebrate that power-pop gem.
Still, let's raise a toast to Guyville, which turns 20 years old tomorrow. It helped put the spotlight on the Chicago scene. The critically acclaimed record helped put Casey Rice, Idful Studios and Rainbo's photo booth on the map. The video for "Never Said" was filmed at Garfield Park Conservatory. Phair is a homer. So happy birthday to her album. Read our interview with Phair discussing the Guyville reissue and tour in 2008.
