Sweaty and satisfied from the sold-out live show from James Murphy's LCD Soundsystem at Metro (live review), legions of fans descended on Smart Bar for an after party featuring members of the band and adored Berlin techno star Ellen Allien.
Festivities kicked off with local Wednesday night residents Blue J and Tyrel Williams who kept things reliably upbeat, mixing deep house, nudisco and a bit of techno before James Murphy, Pat Mahoney and Gavin Russom took over. Russom was the first one up from the LCD crew. While we give him credit for track selection—you can do know wrong leading off your set with Âme's deep techno anthem "Rej"—he struggled a bit in the mixing department. Oh well, it happens to the best DJs some days. From there Pat Mahoney and James Murphy donned their Special Disco Version guise, propping up the dance floor with a killer selections that moved from classic '90s house to heavy doses of the deep disco that has made the two of them such sought after DJs.
Around 2am Ellen Allien stepped up to the decks, simply fading out the last of the disco to focus on her blistering, emotive techno. If ever Smart Bar's high-end Funktion One sound system got a run for it's money, it was at the hands of Allien, who kept the crowd grooving with her sublime and understated mixing until the lights came up. The breadth of music covered may have been a bit much for a crowd that was mostly familiar with LCD's material as a band, but that said, it was a great way to end the night.
